Deadlines, procrastination and time management: the college curse

Deadlines in University may appear very daunting for many students. To meet these deadlines, it is essential to have excellent time management skills. Some students plan ahead, whereas others procrastinate. Many students state that they do not find starting assignments ahead of time as effective. Many find themselves work more effectively near the deadline, as they are convinced they work better under pressure. The art of having excellent time management skills comes with practice and dedication.

During my years in University, time management did not come easy and it doesn’t come naturally to anyone. I had to prioritize tasks, time tracking can assist you with taking care of urgent and important tasks first. Time management is very similar to organizing your space. A messy closet is like a chaotic timetable, as they both have limited space but how you use that space efficiently is key. For example, if everything is just stuffed into your closet, instead of being categorized and organized – it will take you forever to find something. Similarly organizing your time works the same way, have a timetable, mark and prioritize the important tasks to be effective. The purpose of managing your time efficiently is not to overload your schedule with extra tasks. Rather, the focus is to accomplish the important tasks and still have time to enjoy life.

During my university years, I always managed to get my tasks done but not always in advance. My cumulative GPA upon graduation was 3.7, however during my junior years it was lower than that. I had figured out my weakness, which was poor time management. As I mentioned earlier, I was getting tasks done but not in a timely manner. I would become stressed, tired and exhausted by the end of the tasks, whether it be mathematics homework or even something as fun as writing a reflective essay. I would always be worried and calculating the time I will spend completing the task – a total panic state of mind. As a student, you should not overschedule yourself. As I stated, I was calculating every minute in my head while scheduling my tasks. Don’t schedule everything down to the very minute; there will always be something unexpected that might come up.

I feel like students who are employed part-time during their studies have to juggle and manage their time the most. According to researchers, it is not recommended for students to be taking on more than 12-15 hours of work per week. As it can hinder the quality of their studies and become a distraction. Let’s say, a full-time university student, who may be employed with 25-hour workweeks, is likely to miss class or lack attention during class, simply because he or she is not mentally alert. Maximizing your schedule does not mean success, it is how you organize your schedule; keep a healthy fine balance between your work, school and family/friends. Schedule empty time slots to study, ensure that everything is scheduled effectively.

Procrastination and Time Management

According to the dictionary, procrastination is defined as the purposeful postponement or delaying of the performance of a task or making of a decision. Procrastination can make your academic, personal and work life terrible. I believe procrastination roots typically from two factors. Firstly, people usually procrastinate simply because they don’t like the task that they have to achieve. Generally avoid it because they might not be so proficient with it. As a student, I disliked studying for exams, most of the times during my junior year I would study last minute by pulling an all-nighter for an exam the next day. What you do not realize often times is that last minute cramming is not effective. If you spend an hour a day until your exam versus five hours the night before, it is highly likely you will learn the content much more thoroughly and you will be much more fresh during your exam – because of a full night of sleep, rather than being charged on coffee or Red Bull.

The other reason people procrastinate is because the task may be daunting and overly difficult. What happens is that your mind becomes overwhelmed and you begin to feel completely helpless. There are several ways of overcoming this, break down your essay or project into smaller sessions. For example, if you have to work on a research essay, plan it out the parts ahead of time. Start by conducting the research for the essay one day, and then schedule an outline for the next day along with the thesis. So forth, do a chunk of the essay everyday, then save the last day for proofreading and citations. Believe me, if the total time required for your essay is estimated to be eight hours, it is much easier to do two hours a day for the week than the entire eight hours in one day.
